From the Principal

Our value for term 2 is Honesty:
The quality of being honest.
Telling the truth and being sincere.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The term is racing by and we are having a very active week at school as students are participating in a fitness fun week, organised by our year 6 teachers and their classes.  It has been great seeing the children involved in a number of very vigorous activities. We had a superb jump off last Friday for the National Heart Foundation event.  Many children are still skipping happily around the school.

So despite the change in the weather, our fitness programmes have continued with great benefits for all concerned.  I am very pleased with the balance we are able to achieve here between a rigorous academic learning programme and a high level of physical fitness where our students are concerned.

Winter sports
Due to the rain last Tuesday, the winter sports zone day was postponed until next Tuesday June 8 – same time and place.  We hope to see you there to help us cheer on our sports stars!

PTA
Our wonderful PTA is planning a movie night on Wednesday 28 July.  Please note the date in your diary and join us for further adventures with Shrek.  It promises to be a great night of family entertainment with the profits going to the PTA.

Also, please remember to visit the Mad Butcher’s shop at Manukau and drop your entry form which is in the next section, for a free bike into the box there.  The bike is bright green and terribly gorgeous!

Queen’s Birthday
Just a reminder that school will be closed next Monday 7 June.  While the Queen of the commonwealth actually celebrates her birthday on 21 April each year, it is tradition in NZ for us to acknowledge her birthday on the first Monday in June.  It is always a public holiday here.  Interestingly, her birthday is celebrated on a different day in all of the commonwealth countries.

Best wishes for the best of weekends.  I hope that you can all have an enjoyable break over the 3-day weekend.  I am going to head up to our bach for a very lazy weekend with a good book and some long walks in mind!  Or maybe I just might curl up by the fire if it turns cold..

Kind regards,
Marilyn Gwilliam
Principal

General Notices

Welcome to our New Students: Papatoetoe Central School welcomes the following new students to our school – Tung Bui, Samantha Pham and Tara Anderson.

Tips from the PCS Environment & Sustainability Team: There are a number of simple steps we can all take to save water and power and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle much of the waste that is produced in our school and at home.
Heating.  - Choose a heater that suits the space you are trying to heat. For instance, a fan heater will not be the most efficient way to heat a large room. Your options include oil column heaters, fan heaters and radiant heaters. Gas heaters can be costly to run and give off moisture.  If you use heated towel rails, turn them off at night.

Book Club:   The book club orders will close on Friday, 11 June 2010.  Would you please make sure all orders and money are put into a sealed envelope and ALL CHEQUES are made out to Papatoetoe Central School, as we send one cheque to pay for our book order.  The order and money is to be placed in the money chute outside the side entrance to the office.

Birthday Celebrations:  From time to time parents bring to school birthday cakes and lollies to share with the pupils in their child’s class as part of their birthday celebrations. As a school we would prefer the food aspect of birthday celebrations to be kept as an out of school activity. We are very conscious of our goal to be a health promoting school. We want the children to eat healthy food whenever possible during the regular school day. A fruit platter or a box of fruit would be most welcome.  Once again your support with this matter would be very much appreciated.
